Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 12

For this sprint, I've been mainly focusing on finalizing character mesh textures since we are in the final stages of the project. We were able to get the final game res of Seita and Setsuko in Engine so that the character materials would be able to show up. Here are the characters in engine with the newly polished environment.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 11

For this week's assignment, I focused on texturing Seita to match the Ghibli anime style. I used curvature maps to add the "dusty" look on his clothing and body, and hand painted the colors and details.

Here is the Substance Painter Render of the final texture of Seita.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 10

I added textures to Ghibli-style textures to the campfire logs and swing meshes. I used the smart material Ashley created for our wooden textures.

I completed the Seita topology and the bake in Substance Painter. Next week I will focus on texturing Seita.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 9

For this sprint, I completed sculpting the campfire log wood, game-res for it, and texturing it. I did the same for the swing. I also tested out a new texture for the rock mesh. I will go back next week to create more rock meshes

I used the GhibliWood Smart Material that Ashley (Tech Lead) created. It worked well with the sculpt AO and curvatures.

Here is the sculpt of the swing, along with game res and textures. I sent over the game res for Ashley to rig.

An experimental rock texture in Ghibli's watercolor style.

Sprint #1 Delivery

This is the schedule I will be following for the next five sprints for the VR project.

For this week's sprint I finished texturing Setsuko in Substance Painter. Setsuko will be my portfolio piece so I will pose her with a rig for the final portfolio presentation.

Sprint #7 Delivery

For this sprint, I added additional background tree cards to create the treeline in the background. I used one card and rotated/scaled it so that it gave the illusion of various trees.

The treeline in UE4

I finished topology for Setsuko and did a bake in Substance Painter.

I created some tiny flower meshes out of planes that are close in style to David's flower meshes to keep the poly count low.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 6

For this sprint, I focused on texturing the other Houdini tree trunk that Ashley created. I tried to create the same Ghibli painterly effect in 3D coat.

I also replaced the other cloud cards with some wispier clouds.

I created a cloud/fog fluid sim in Maya.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 5

For this week's sprint, I painted a variation of Ghibli-style cloud cards and lily pads. I used opacity maps to create the translucent plane.

I also textured Ashley tree that she made in Houdini in 3D coat. I tried to create a painted texture style.

Grave of the Fireflies: Sprint 4

For this Sprint, I continued to sculpt Setsuko up to completion. Here is the final sculpt before I begin quad draw topology for next week.

I created an additional tree card in the Ghibli "painterly" style in Photoshop and brought it into UE4.

I proxied out the campfire logs, rocks, and a tree trunk within Maya.

The proxies in UE4.

Here are some vine leaves I painted for the vines the David will create to decorate the inner cave and doorframe.

Grave of the Fireflies VR: Sprint 2

For this VR sprint, I am modeling Setsuko, the little sister of Seita. I used the UE4 mannequin as a reference for scaling. I modeled basic shapes in Maya to provide the correct scaled size of the character.

After importing the fbx of the basic shapes from Maya, I began sculpting details into the model. It will be an exciting challenge to make a 3D model look like a 2D Ghibli character.

This is the original concept art I created for the reincarnation scene, although instead of this background we will be using the cave with the door frames.
